I am currently working on setting my goals and objectives for my term as Chair of the SLA Legal Division. I’m very lucky to be following the footsteps of our current chair, Martha Foote who takes organization and procedures to new heights and makes my work ahead much easier.
One of the key things that I want to accomplish is the more frequent and broader communication with our members and potential members. This requires a lot of strategy because Social Media will play an important role. Our current methods are the foundation of our communication and I want to use social networking to build upon that foundation.
I will apply the skills and talents of many of our members along the way to help make this a successful building project. I have learned many things as I advise my clients about using Social Media to promote their core product and I will apply that same advice to my work with the Legal Division.
The Division was founded in 1993 and our website, looks like it might have been created at that inception. Priority number 1 is to execute a plan to update our website. The goal is to make it so that the people responsible for content such as officer and committee reports could upload the data themselves. Of course control is a necessity for this work too. All of the necessary parameters are floating through my head as I weigh pros and cons against dreams and necessities.
Now, you may wonder why I’m telling you about my work for the Legal Division. The truth is, that I know that I will need to practice what I preach in my work as Chair. I will need to employ strategy about what tools we should use. We will need to be clear and concise about what we will allow and what is not allowed. I will need to relate goals, objectives and actions to our Executive Board along with a balanced view of what will work and what I recommend so that they can consider carefully the options being offered. In short, I must be strategic across the board in this work.
Social Media work can not be done in a vacuum. It takes the knowledge and skills of many. I am confident that the many people I will be working with will ensure that this goal of improved and more frequent communications will be a success.

Throughout my career as a librarian I have participated in professional organizations. SLA is my professional home and I’m proud of the network of friends and colleagues I met through SLA who are such a part of my life.
Without this professional involvement, I would have suffered from a lack of engagement and challenges in my career. My volunteer activities both with SLA and the Kentucky Library Association offered ways to develop my skills and career beyond my daily work.
I am most proud of the network I have developed through these organizations and I selfishly take pride in the accomplishments of fellow committee and board members. Thus, I am proud to personally endorse Stacey Greenwell for the position of SLA Division Cabinet Chair-Elect. You can read about her dedication and commitment to SLA in her own words.
My support for Stacey is based upon my knowledge of her work ethic and her commitment to the advancement of librarianship. She is committed to sharing the successes and failures of her own innovations so that others can improve and expand for the benefit of their own libraries. With that kind of commitment to work and a proven leadership record for SLA I know that Stacey will serve members like me well.
My career has benefited from the things I have learned through SLA . For me to continue my personal progress and professional development I have to invest an effort in strong leadership. Thus, I support great leaders like Stacey because they are the strength behind SLA’s success.

One of the things I have noticed during the past 8 months or so is that education opportunities abound from a variety of sources. Personally, the best sourced for continuing education that assist in building my skills and business are from my professional organizations: AIIP and SLA.
Later this morning I will be attending an AIIP webinar that is targeted to first year independent information professionals. This afternoon I am attending a free webinar provided MKS and Ravenflow that discusses Content Management.
As I focus my business on content management and strategic information solutions, I find it important to expand my knowledge continually. If I’m not aware of available solutions, how can I advise my clients on their best options?
Continuing Education also comes in the form of reading. For the first time in my life, my reading is stretched beyond my comfort zone. I read more technical info than ever before. Understanding the nuances of how information solutions work will only assist me as I guide clients to the right source for their content management needs.
I’ve always done a great job of thinking broadly and strategically for information solutions and user needs. Now I know it is important to stay abreast of the technical nuances as well. Strategic thinking without technical ability results in time and effort wasted. Wasted anything is the last thing I want for myself or my clients.
So my education continues. While I long for my own tech support department, I’m lucky to have colleagues who can provide assistance and advise as needed. These colleagues offer layman’s term explanations for the gritty technical details that are just out of my grasp.
And I find that as the knowledge expands, those gritty details are understood more quickly and sometimes I don’t even have to call my tech support for assistance. So, maybe I’ll learn enough to network my home and office computers in the next few months or build a network server that can be my data back-up. If I can’t apply that technical knowledge directly, I will at least have learned the how-to and why behind the process and thus my strategic ability remains intact and ever-expanding.

The hint of Fall is in the air, earlier this week it was rainy and cool, so home-made Tomato soup and grilled cheese was the meal de jour. With that, comes the back-to-school philosophy and the ever present essay assignment “What You Did On Summer Vacation.” While, I’m definitely not in school I am a believer in lifetime learning. Stagnant mental capacity kills, thus, I’m going to share a few of the things I have done over the past several months.
Professionally:
- I transitioned from the position of Library Manager for the largest branch of a major regional law firm to Independent Information Professional
- I began working part-time as Marketing Director for a small company.
- I began this blog and expanded my writing aspirations beyond a few SLA publications to thinking about other venues including the Louisville Bar Association Briefs. I continue to work on articles and presentation ideas in order to offer my limited expertise to those who may benefit.
- Attended SLA’s Annual Conference in Seattle.
- Joined AIIP.
Personally:
- Became a dedicated fan of DMB
- Grew a sub-par garden
- Did some great house projects but not everything (what will I work on this Winter if Iget everything done now?)
- Took in a new “foster” dog name B J who is older than both Guy and Gomer but who has livened up the house with his love of the tennis ball. (To find your own great dog check out GRRAND or your local humane society.) Note: This was a family effort.
- Became an “aunt” to Baby Isa born on the 4th of July.
- Reached out to old and new friends with a more concerted effort.
- Continued as often as possible to visit my family and provide care relief for those who take care of my Grandfather.
Community & Other Volunteer Activities
- Dedicated more time to LYG and our work on the BFF Campaign
- Volunteered to serve on two AIIP committees and the Kentucky Virtual Library Advisory Committee.
- Served on the KY Chapter of SLA’s Nominating Committee.
- Not nearly enough but my time seems a bit shorter than it used to be.
My plans for the Fall include work on an article/presentation with an esteemed library colleague, the continued growth of my Answer Maven business, preparation for hand-made Christmas Gifts and the continued support of my professional and community organizations. I might even take a Zumba class.
This post has been in the edit mode for about a week. This evening I attended a Women Lawyer’s Association event and reconnected with an old colleague. With great pride and truth I confessed that being the Answer Maven is the hardest and most satisfying work I have ever done. The challenge of owning and growing a business as well as the challenge and stimulation provided by client projects is everything I’ve desired for a satisfying occupation.
I truly am thankful for the encouragement and support I’ve gotten from everyone, my family and my friends have been unbelievable. C has proven to be very patient with the long hours and my seeming attachment to the laptop. VP deserves a special recognition, on a day when everything was going wrong the UPS man brought a box of goodies that inspired and relieved. SL has provided encouragement, great article & business ideas as well as marketing plugs. My mentor and friend, Ulla, has provided encouragement, advise and support for too long to remember. SG and the entire KY Chapter crew have been responsive, encouraging and even dropped a few marketing plugs and referrals in my direction. SV designed my oh-so-cool logo. LV provided great marketing material guidance and E helped me find a part-time gig to help pay the bills so C could take a weekend off every now and then. I couldn’t do this without all of you–Thank You!
